Classes - AKC Tracking

There are no tracking classes offered at this time.  Future class information will be posted here as it becomes available.  Please DO NOT contact the training secretary for information on the classes.

Beginner Tracking: This class is for dogs and handlers that have not tracked before, to assist them in attaining the AKC Tracking Dog (TD) title. Students will learn the basics of teaching their dog to track, including starts, turns, article indication and aging. Students will also learn to plot tracks and estimate yardage. There will be a lecture portion to familiarize students with equipment, regulations and theory of scent work.

Prerequisites: None

Length of class: Seven sessions (first session consists of 1/2-day lecture plus field work)

Additional requirement: Participants will be required to work at one of Capital's tracking tests in March or December

Intermediate Tracking: This class will assist dog/handlers teams in solving specific problems encountered in training for the AKC Tracking Dog (TD) title. Preference for class will be given to those who completed the Beginner Tracking Class. Those who did not participate in that class must demonstrate that they and their dog have experience in tracking equivalent to passing a beginner tracking class (ability to plot a track, work 90-degree turns, at least 50 yard legs). All sessions will be held at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Virginia. Each session will build upon the previous with a goal of preparing students for their certification track. Students will be required to maintain tracking logs. This class is a hands-on experience, where the participants will work with and handle their dogs in the field. The number of participants will be limited to five to insure a small teacher-student ratio and time for one-on-one instruction.

Length of class: Six sessions

Additional requirement: Participants will be required to work at one of Capital's tracking tests in March or December.
